This is a unique opportunity to view one of the county’s most historic and prestigious mansions. Edgewater, on the Hudson River in Barrytown, New York, combines classical architecture with a dramatic setting to create one of the Hudson Valley’s most charming riverside homes. Originally built in 1825 for Captain Lowndes Brown of Charleston and his wife Margaret Livingston, the estate was sold in 1852 to Robert Donaldson. Edgewater flourished under the Donaldsons, whose descendants retained the house until 1902. For the next four decades up to World War II, Edgewater was owned by the John Jay Chapman Family, but during most of this period the house stood vacant. In 1946, author Gore Vidal purchased Edgewater. He resided in the house until 1969, when he sold it to Richard H. Jenrette. Jenrette bought Edgewater from Vidal in 1969 and owned the home for over 45 years. He repurchased surrounding land that had been sold and filled the house with period antiques and art, including Donaldson’s unusual two suites of Duncan Phyfe furniture, various Donaldson and Livingston family portraits, as well as objects d’art from the Livingston era. Upon Dick Jenrette’s death in 2018, Edgewater was devised to Classical American Homes Preservation Trust.

A wonderful Riedinger & Caire Poughkeepsie, NY beautifully decorated “#3” (3 gallon) crockery jug from the private collection of Judge James Brands. Circa 1860’s, the jug measures 16 1/2”T x 9 1/2”D and is salt-glazed stoneware in cobalt blue. Riedinger & Caire Pottery was first developed by John Caire when he bought Poughkeepsie Pottery in 1839. Adam Caire entered his father’s business in 1852. After selling it and buying back in 1856, Caire became a partner to Philip Riedinger. Maple Grove mansion was built in 1850 by New York Banker Charles A. Macy. The architectural influence of Downing and Davis is still evident in the Italianate detailing and pastoral vistas of Maple Grove. After Macy sold the property it passed into ownership of the Hamilton and Kinkead fmilies. Beginning in 1955 the mansion was unoccupied enduring a serious fire by arson in 1985. Maple Grove has managed a somewhat miraculous survival. Reconstruction and restoration efforts have begun and an appropriate new use is being sought for this beautiful building. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Italianate style mansion at Locust Grove was designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis for Samuel F. B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. It was completed in 1851. After Morse's death in 1872, his family spent less time in Poughkeepsie and eventually emptied the mansion and rented the estate. William and Martha Young, moved to Locust Grove in 1895 and eventually bought the property from Morse's heirs in 1901. William and Martha Young's daughter Annette and son Innis also worked to preserve and restore the house, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. Annette Young died in 1975, establishing in her will a trust so that her house, property, and collections of paintings and decorative arts could be opened to the public. Today the mansion is open to the public but not “behind-the-ropes”! Your private tour escorted by Executive Director Ken Snodgrass will reveal the family histories and offer an engaging experience with the collection. Wine and cheese on the veranda overlooking the Hudson River will follow your exclusive tour.

Short introduction to a tour of the Walkway Over the Hudson: Take a guided tour of the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Site. The Walkway is 212 feet above the Hudson River, stretching for over one mile between the hills on either side of the river. Because it stretches between hillsides, its an easy walk with no steps and only one short gradual incline on one side of bridge. The Walkway is on what was formerly the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, an engineering marvel, which was built in the 1880's. Your guide, Fred Schaeffer, was Chairman of the Walkway Over the Hudson organization during the bridge’s conversion from a railroad to the longest, dedicated pedestrian bridge in the world. Fred will tell you the fascinating story of how a groundswell of support led to a unique public and private partnership to convert the abandoned bridge into the Walkway Over the Hudson. Since opening to the public in 2009 it has had three million visitors from all over the world. Fred will share photographs of what the bridge looked like before and during its renovation. As you take the walk, you will see in person, breathtaking views of the Hudson River Valley from the Walkway. Fred Schaeffer is a resident of Pleasant Valley. He has been a practicing attorney in Dutchess County for over 30 years. He is a former President of the Dutchess County Bar Association. His hobbies of bicycling, photography and history led to an interest in the historic Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge. In January of 2004 he became Chairman of the Walkway over the Hudson organization, a non-profit group, which owned the Bridge. As Chairman he led the organization’s efforts to convert it into the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, which opened in October of 2009.

Charles Sylvester Piersaull photographed much of Hyde Park during the late 19th and 20th centuries. The man behind the lens was called a “jack of all trades.” He was a fishmonger, repaired bicycles, and took photographs of people and places in town. His tiny house, still standing at 6 West Market Street, was both his home and the local fish market. Whether you are looking to explore the historic properties of Hyde Park such as the FDR or Vanderbilt Estates, soak up the incredible natural beauty of the Hudson Valley, or indulge the foodie in you, Piersaull House is an ideal base to explore the region. Our tiny house is both quirky and cozy. Piersaull House has a living/dining room and full kitchen on the main floor, and two bedrooms and one bathroom upstairs. Piersaull House sleeps four in one king bedroom and one double bedroom. Located in the heart of ‘downtown Hyde Park,’ amenities include: keyless entry, equipped kitchen, heating/air, linens/towels, hairdryer, on-demand tankless hot water, washer/dryer, WiFi with smart TV (no cable), Retro arcade game table, fenced backyard with fire pit/grill.

Join Town of Red Hook/ Village of Tivoli Historian Emily Majer on a paddle through the beautiful North Tivoli Bay, out into the Hudson to explore the “ruins” on South Cruger’s Island. Jealous of the picturesque ruins of Europe, John Church Cruger built a folly of arches on the island in 1842, where he displayed Mayan relics from the Yucatan city of Uxmal. The scene delighted steamboat passengers and guests to the Cruger family’s eponymous island home nearby. The relics were sold to the American Museum of Natural History in 1919. The tour can accommodate two people in a canoe and two in kayaks, provided by the tour guide. If people prefer to use their own boats, that’s fine. Paddles, life jackets, and light snacks will be provided as well. Total time on the river and island will be about three hours. There is quite a bit of paddling involved so some experience is strongly suggested. The trip can be redeemed in the spring or summer of 2022.

The Annual Mount Gulian Historic Site Gala Event held onsite at their Beacon area, Hudson Riverfront 18thC Home and Barn from 4:30 PM - 9 PM on June 2nd 2022. This is a wonderful annual event that will feature a unique historical figure in costume as the main speaker for the evening. This year’s Annual Dinner featured First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, portrayed by a finely skilled actress from the American Historical Theatre. In the midst of the Second World War, we learned about Mrs. Roosevelt’s use of radio addresses, public appearances and her “My Day” columns to calm fears and rally citizens to do their part in the war effort. The New York State Society of the Cincinnati was honored at this event. Everyone enjoyed cocktails on the riverside lawn, a four-course, historically themed dinner served in our 18th century Dutch barn.

Caitlin considers herself fortunate to have grown up surrounded by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. After moving to New York Caitlin worked in journalism and design. Blue Dot Jewelry began when Caitlin discovered precious metal clay. For her, silver clay was an answer to the question of how to create lasting jewelry that captures and pays homage to the ethereal details of the natural world. This clay is composed of microscopic particles of silver suspended in a small amount of organic material. Once a piece is dried and kiln fired, the pure silver (.999) is all that remains. Caitlin’s unique method incorporates leaves and seeds, shells and other collected bits either directly into the process or for inspiration.

Your exclusive private tour of Rokeby mansion in Barrytown, New York will dazzle your senses with its distinguished interiors and notable local history. Built 200 years ago on land granted by the Crown in 1688, Rokeby has remained in the family for generations. Beginning in the 18th century as tenant farms the landlords included Colonel Henry Beekman, Margaret Beekman and Alida Livingston. Alida, and her husband General John Armstrong developed their land holdings into a successful farm and built the main house.

Generations later the death of William B. Astor in 1875, left Rokeby to Astor’s granddaughter Margaret Astor Ward, niece of Julia Ward Howe (author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic") and wife of Congressman John Winthrop Chanler. The Chanlers died shortly thereafter, leaving the place to their ten children who ranged in age from six months to twelve years old. For twenty years, Rokeby served as a private orphan asylum for the rambunctious heirs. By 1899, Margaret Livingston Chanler had bought out the interest of her siblings, and had started a dairy operation at Rokeby. Descendants continue to live at Rokeby a 43 room mansard roof mansion and farm.

The tour will also include the barns where Superior Concept Monsters, operated by family members, designs and creates puppets and artwork to preserve, promote, and develop public processions and pageant puppetry as a distinct and vital artform.

Historic, imported Royal Doulton 1910 plate featuring Poughkeepsie Van Kleeck House. The Dutchess County Society in the City of New York was founded in 1896. Not to be confused with the Dutchess County Historical Society (founded in 1914), this earlier organization was organized by and for elite and successful men of the county who lived primarily in New York City. The goal was to both create a fraternal organization of mutual support, as well as keep up ties “back home.” The highlight of the year was the prestigious annual dinner that traditionally offered some kind of souvenir. Between 1910 and 1917 a total of seven white Royal Doulton plates were created specifically for the Society and imported from England. Each featured a historic Dutchess County location surrounded by tulips to acknowledge the county’s earliest Dutch settlers. 10 1/2 inch diameter. The plate given out in 1910 features the earliest significant home in Poughkeepsie, the Van Kleeck House at what is today Mill and Vassar Streets. The back of the plate reads, “The Van Kleeck House, Poughkeepsie, NY. Built by Baltus Van Kleeck in 1702, demolished in 1835.” This item must be picked up or shipped using a third party shipper.
