NOTABLE AFRICAN CERAMICS. (A) Modern art pot representing a human torso. Black flat glaze. Baule people, Ivory Coast. Acquired 2001. H 9in. (B) Small vase-shaped pot excavated at the site of the ancient city of Djenne-Djeno near the current site of Djenne and south of Timbuktu, Mali. Djenne-Djeno was occupied for centuries before it declined in the 1400s and was replaced by Djenne as the southern terminus (South of Timbuktu) for the Trans-Saharan trade in salt, gold and other commodities. This ceramic probably dates from the 1400s. H 4.75in. (C) Hourglass shaped ceramic. Use not known. Excavated at site of Djenne-Djeno. Estimated to dated from the 1300s. H 5.75in.

THEY SHALL BEAT THEIR SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES. Sculpture by Romanian-born sculptor, Moisaye Marans, who emigrated to the US and became a citizen in 1939. He taught at Brooklyn College in New York City. The title is based on a passage in the Book of Isaiah, “…and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks”. This sculpture became the official symbol of the US Atomic Energy Commission. A 14 ft tall version can be found in the Community Church in New York City. The original and other works were stolen from the artist’s studio in 1977 and never recovered. This bronzed stone copy is on a custom base where the artist’s name appears. Acquired in 1968. H 22in with base.

(C) Large plate with imprinted maple leaf design. Made by applying maple leaves to wet ceramic before black glaze was added and piece was fired. Signed on back Collected from artist in 1991 at Bard College art fair. (D) Eucalyptus caesia pot by Georgina Elms who specialized in pottery highlighting Australian plants. Elms is considered one of the foremost ceramic artists in Australia, noted especially for her use of sterling silver decoration in the glaze as exemplified by this work. She has been commissioned to create official gifts for Queen Elizabeth II, the King and Queen of Spain, and other notables. Signed on bottom. Acquired 1993. H 4in. Diameter 5in. (E) Deer playing in a tropical paradise. Decorative plate acquired in Mexico City in 1956. Hand painted and designed for wall mount. Diameter 21.25in.
