Enjoy four tickets to the Musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". This is the final on stage show of Season #65 running the middle three weekends of May, 2023. A brief description about the Musical: "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (254–184 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from a line often used by vaudeville comedians to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater". The musical's original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Author (Musical)." During their lifetime, the County Players Theatre has presented over 200 productions and have served thousands of theatre goers who continue to reward the theatre's efforts with their loyal attendance. In 1977, they acquired the old Academy Theatre in the Village of Wappingers Falls, and through countless hours of volunteer efforts, have turned a crumbling relic into a living theatre – The County Players Falls Theatre. Enjoy a guided tour for four of "The Old Drovers Inn" in the town of Dover. Standing on the old State Road for over 250 years, this time capsule from the colonial era still exudes the same charm and dignified class. After your private tour, enjoy some light refreshments and discuss your impressions of the stately hotel. History of the Inn: In 1750, John and Ebenezer Preston opened the doors of The Old Drovers Inn, which was then called the Clear Water Tavern. This watering hole catered to the desires of the cattle drovers – a group of professional middle men who purchased herds of cattle and swine from New England farmers. They would drive animals down post roads to the New York City markets, and sell them “for as good a price as they could get.” These New England “cowboys” were a sporty lot who liked their rum and always seemed to have an abundance of ready cash gleaned from their lucrative trade. They supplemented from time to time with the rewards of a midnight gathering at the card table. As their financial prominence became even greater, they hired others to handle the tedious business of keeping the herds moving while the drovers themselves galloped from Inn to Inn along the route. One of the six bedrooms of the Inn is called the Meeting Room because it was used for public meetings. It was in this room that the Town of Dover separated from the Town of Pawling in 1807. The Inn remained in the Preston Family until it was sold to the Potter family in 1910. In 1962, the Inn served as a romantic hideaway for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton after the filming of “Cleopatra.” Taylor was still married to Eddie Fisher at the time, so the couple needed a romantic hideaway. They rented all the rooms at the Old Drovers Inn. It offered an idyllic and secret haven for the duo, who later married. In 1988, the Inn was sold to Kemper Peacock and Alice Pitcher. Together they brought the Inn to a new level and made Old Drovers a designation retreat for many Manhattanites and people worldwide. It became a favorite stop for the Berkshire-bound, and the tap room was noted for its generous martini. Value $200. https://www.olddroversinn.com/. Beautiful pastel 'Summer Skies' painted by Donna Levinston. Art 6" x 6". Framed 12" X 12" Artist statement: "My pastel landscapes, drawn both in color and black and white, capture a moment in time. They present the beauty as well as the powerful forces of nature. My work expresses the qualities of light, mood and atmosphere more than it depicts any specific location." This aspect allows the viewer to interpret and reflect on their own emotions. I hope my drawings will elicit memories of a place once visited or a place one yearns to experience. My recent triptychs and grid series explore the relationship between imagery. Through this process, be it conscious or unconscious, a story unfolds. Value $700. In the fall of 1869 Frederic and Isabel returned to America from an 18-month-long trip to Europe and the Middle East. While living in Cozy Cottage they decided to build another house – one that was much larger and more permanent. Impressed by the architecture they saw in cities like Beirut, Jerusalem and Damascus, they envisioned a home that incorporated Middle Eastern elements and designs. Drawings by Richard Morris Hunt document that Church considered using him as an architect, but ultimately he decided on Calvert Vaux, who was then designing Central Park’s buildings. Vaux had professional qualifications and personal ties to the Church family. He was the author of Villas and Cottages (1857) a pattern book for rural domestic architecture. Vaux's wife Mary was the sister of Jervis McEntee, a close friend. Church spent about two years working with Vaux. While the exact contributions of the two are unclear, Vaux probably was responsible for structural elements, while Church devised myriad ornamental elements. It is believed that both, probably with Isabel Church’s input, cited the house and its many windows to frame the magnificent views. In the fall of 1872, the family moved into the second story of the new house while the decoration of the first floor continued. Church chose the color scheme for the house, mixing paint on his palette, then instructing his workmen on how to mix the colors. Eclectic furnishings soon filled the house, gathered from the long trip abroad, from shops in New York City, and even from a missionary in Persia. The thousands of objects and the painted décor evoke the great civilizations of the past, and present a rich contrast to the natural world visible through the windows. One Year Artist Circle Membership at Olana includes: Unlimited free admission to the main house and walking Outdoor; Olana Tours for four adults; 15% discount purchases from the Olana Museum store; free or discounted admission to most educational programs; invitations to exclusive members-only exhibition previews and events; discount on Summer Party tickets; an Olana memento.
