C-1850 Adam Caire Poughkeepsie, NY #3 Blue Decorated Crock, Double-Handled, From the Private Collection of Judge James Brands. Pickup Only, Rhinebeck, NY

Judge Brands hand-picked this 19th century beauty from his chambers in the Supreme Court building in Poughkeepsie, NY. Circa 1850s, this double handled crock measures 10.25" high x 11.5" diameter and is salt-glazed stoneware decorated in cobalt blue having a beautiful motif. (Judge Brands donated crocks to the DCHS In 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024 they all sold to benefit the DCHS!)

This year's example made by Adam Caire is the earliest donated so far, made between 1852 and 1856. Riedinger & Caire Pottery was first developed by John Caire when he bought Poughkeepsie Pottery in 1839. Adam Caire entered his father's business in 1852. After selling the business and then buying it back in 1856, Caire became a partner to Philip Riedinger. The company manufactured stoneware, earthenware, firebricks, flower pots, jugs and bottles. One popular customer included Matthew Vassar's brewery! The partners later developed sewer pipes which were used at the Capitol in Albany and at the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

In the past, Judge Brands hand picked all of his 19th century beauties from his chambers in the Supreme Court building in Poughkeepsie and hand carried it to the delivery service for the auction as seen in these images from past DCHS auctions.

Lane Brothers Swift Mill #15 ca. 1875 Coffee Grinder. Pickup Only, Rhinebeck, NY

Lane Brothers is famous for their coffee grinders. This one is a larger size, measuring 20" Tall x 11" Wide plus 3" handle. Item in very good condition. Original box has been replaced by contemporary wooden box.

Beriah Swift invented and produced coffee grinders in the 1840s out of the Town of Washington in Dutchess County. His cousins, the Lane Brothers, greatly expanded the business and relocated to Poughkeepsie in 1882. The Lane brothers made many cast iron items, including boilers, and in 1901 they launched production of a steam-driven automobile.

DCHS is fortunate to have in its collections a near perfect Lane Brothers "Swift Mill" similar to this. For clarity, when DCHS accepts a collections item it is in perpetuity so we would never sell a collections item. Since DCHS already has a good example of the mill, we have allowed the donor to contribute this item to the auction.

The OLANA Private Landscape and Historic House Combo Tour for 5 in Hudson, NY

The complete Olana touring experience in one package! Led by an OLANA staff member for a group of up to 5 people, this private two-hour combination tour begins with a 60-minute guided tour in the electric vehicle of Frederic Church's artist-designed landscape, followed by a complete tour of both floors of the Main House. 4-week advance reservation is required. This tour involves several flights of stairs.

ABOUT OLANA - Olana is the masterwork of Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), the preeminent American artist of the mid-19th entury. Olana's 250-acre artist-designed landscape and Historic House embraces unrivaled panoramic views of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains, and welcomes more than 170,000 visitors annually. Olana is a public park and is open daily from 8 AM to sunset. Admission to the park is free of charge.

Frederic Church used landscape painting to convey the expansionist, optimistic worldview of mid-19th century America. His panoramic canvases emphasize meticulous atmospheric and botanical detail. Viewers delighted in identifying specific species of plants and birds, the strata in rocks, and various cloud formations. Church wanted to use art to reconcile the latest revelations of the natural sciences and the age-old evidence of the divine in nature. Today, Church is acknowledged as a leader within the Hudson River School, often called the first truly American style of painting. Frederic Church is well-known as a painter, but he was also a world traveler, a family man, and a self-taught architect, farmer and landscape designer. He and his wife Isabel were pious, well-read, and fun-loving. They raised four children at their estate overlooking the Hudson. Though Frederic and Isabel Church moved among New York City's cultural tastemakers, Olana was their primary home. https://www.olana.org/

Historic Ice Sailing Adventure!

Experience the beauty of an activity first brought to the Hudson Valley by the Dutch in the 1600's, sailing on ice! The Hudson River Ice Yacht Preservation Trust and members of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club will host you and one friend for rides on our historic ice yachts of the 1800's, on the ice of the Hudson Valley in the winter of 2025-2026. These craft, adapted from the boats the Dutch used for winter transport into what were the fastest vehicles on earth, have been lovingly restored by members of the HRIYC. Raced by the members of the many ice yacht clubs located from Newburgh to Athens and up to Orange Lake near Stewart Airport, competitions were regularly covered by the New York Times and local papers, with hundreds of spectators in attendance at Poughkeepsie. Ice sailing is a fickle sport, and we are ready to travel to suitable ice when conditions are good. Keep this in mind, as you will need to keep some flexibility in your schedule! There will hopefully be a window of opportunity to sail that we will inform you of, and we hope for a cold winter. Historically, February has been the most likely month for us to sail. Past HRIYC Commodore and current President of HRIYPT Robert Wills and friends will take you on thrilling rides on the boats of the Roosevelt's, Rogers, and Grinnell families. Included in this experience will be a bottle of bubbly and two HRIYPT commemorative patches. Remember to dress for the occasion! https://www.hriypt.org/

Located on 6 acres in the Hudson Valley, the site includes the 1815 Main House; Cole's 1839 Old Studio; the reconstructed 1846 New Studio building; and panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains. $150 Gift Card to The Hudson House & Distillery in West Park, NY

Gift Certificate can be used for tours and tastings ($30 per person), dining, drinks, or in the shop at Hudson House and Distillery, 1835 Route 9W, West Park, NY 12493.

At The Hudson House, our mission is to produce world class spirits and offer a one-of-a-kind unique experience to our guests, while being true to our story and opening our property for all to enjoy. In the 1850's, Archibald Russell, philanthropist and founder of Ulster County Savings in Kingston, built a home for his family on an estate known as Glen Albyn. Archibald died in 1871 and his widow, Helen, sold the Glen Albyn estate to the Durkee family in 1885. The Durkee's were proprietors of one of the country's leading spice businesses and eventually condiment producers. They purchased the property as a wedding gift for their daughter and owned it until it was purchased in the 1920's by the Christian Brotherhood, and the historic estate served as a working monastery known as the Santa Maria Novitiate until the 1990's. We encourage you to explore the old buildings and truly experience this unique and special property in the heart of the Hudson Valley. Our vision is to share our story and experience through our world class spirits and our breathtaking property, and deliver what Hudson Valley has to offer to the world. Schedule a tour to learn more about how this incredible one-of-a-kind distillery came to life and overcame enormous challenges over 6 years. https://www.thehudsonhouseny.com/
