Enjoy a private tour of the magnificent Edgewater Mansion. Take in the opulence of the mansion's dining room, admire the beautiful elegance of the 19th Century decoration in the sitting rooms and take a peek into some of the rooms off the official public tour. Wander the grounds and you come across the estate's pool, fit for F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Jay Gatsby". Edgewater’s impressive facade is best appreciated by those who approach from the Hudson River. Built in 1824, its temple-fronted colonnade ornaments a large house that was made even more impressive by the addition of an enormous octagonal library in 1854. The combination of an octagonal library and classical portico captivated visitors well into the twentieth century—including its last two private owners, Gore Vidal and Richard Hampton Jenrette. Bring your picnic basket and enjoy the grounds with views to the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains beyond. Value - $700. Enjoy a private, behind the scenes tour for up to four people of the Madam Brett Homestead in Beacon NY. Known as the oldest standing building in southern Dutchess County, the Madam Brett Homestead is a time capsule of colonial life. The home and museum are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the NYS Independence Trail. The homestead, which during the 19th century was referred to as the "Teller House", is now named for Catheryna Rombout Brett, who was the first to develop the patent by selling property. After the death of Catheryna's mother, the couple mortgaged the manor house in New York and moved to the wilderness of southern Dutchess County.  The home was built around 1709 or shortly thereafter. Roger Brett drowned in the Hudson River, leaving Catheryna a widow at age 31 with the surviving three of her four sons. The homestead is notable as the residence of this woman who as a widow organized with twenty-one men the first produce cooperative in the Hudson River highlands. The homestead was subsequently occupied by her descendants until 1954, spanning a total of seven generations. The tour will be led by a member of the Melzingah chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who maintain the historic site. Madam Brett, herself, will also make a special appearance. Value $200. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madam_Brett_Homestead https://www.dar.org/national-society/historic-sites-and-properties/madam-brett-homestead. Inside every Adams Fairacre Farms store there is a heritage of freshness and value that grew out of a farm founded by Ralph A. and Mary Rogers Adams in 1919. We’ve never forgotten our roots. Mary and Ralph planted more than just a farm. They planted an idea; a deep commitment to serving their customers with the best fresh produce around. Out of that commitment grew a store, then three more stores. But all the time, at the root of it was Mary, Ralph, their children and grandchildren. Generations of customers and generations of Adams family members have recognized that under the Adams Fairacre Farms sign you’ll find nothing but the best. Today, there are four Adams stores around the Hudson River Valley – in Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Wappinger and Newburgh – and we are always up to new tricks. Every week in every store there are new products, new tastes and new sale items. We keep it fresh, we keep it cheerful and if you can’t find something, please ask. Every Adams employee is eager to make your shopping experience easy. Value $250. https://adamsfarms.com/. Enjoy a Private tour for up to 4 people of the Clermont Mansion in Germantown NY. Each participant will also receive a Contributor Level Membership, a gift certificate for $15 off any purchase at their online or physical gift shop, and tea and refreshments at Clermont Cottage. Participants will also select a tin of one of Clermont’s custom Harney and Sons tea blends to take home with you. The view from Clermont’s front door is one of the most spectacular views of the Hudson River Valley from anywhere along the river. The history of the Clermont mansion is even more remarkable. The original Clermont mansion was built by Robert Livingston around 1740 on land inherited from his father Robert Livingston, the First Lord of Livingston Manor. The First Lord left 13,000 acres to his second son, Robert, splitting them off from the rest of his 160,000 acre estate upon his death in 1728. In October of 1777 the Revolutionary War arrived at Clermont’s doorstep when a small force of British soldiers arrived, having been dispatched from New York City to offer whatever aid they could to the British army commanded by General John Burgoyne that had recently been defeated at the Battles of Saratoga. The British quickly burned Clermont and twenty four other buildings belonging to the Livingston’s to punish them for their support of the rebels. Margaret Beekman Livingston, the mistress of the house, escaped with her daughters and youngest son to a relative’s house in Connecticut before the burning. She soon returned to the property and through sheer force of will, and a constant stream of letters to New York’s governor, she was able to secure militia exemptions for enough men to rebuild the house. The most famous member of the Livingston family was Chancellor Robert R. Livingston, Margaret’s son. So called because he was New York’s first chancellor, the highest judge in the state under the original state constitution, The Chancellor was an active patriot during the war. He served on the Committee of Five to draft the Declaration of Independence, drafted the New York Constitution and served as the country’s first Secretary for Foreign Affairs. After the war he had the distinct honor of giving the presidential oath of office to George Washington in 1789. The Chancellor was also the lead negotiator of the Louisiana Purchase and the co-inventor of the first commercially viable steam boat. The current site encompasses not only the mansion, rebuilt by Margaret Beekman Livingston and added onto by later generations, but over 500 acres of landscaped gardens, meadow and woodlands, preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Enjoy a tour of one of the jewels of Dutchess County, the Village of Rhinebeck. First settled in 1703, Rhinebeck has been a cultural hub in the county, not only for hosting some of history's most prominent figures including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but also for its outsized influence on local and national life since its humble beginnings. Walk with Village Historian Mike Frazier from the Starr Library to your first stop at Ambrose Wager's "French Villa" style mansion, built on a bluff over the village. You will then head down the hill, learning the charming history of Rhinebeck's transformation from a colonial outpost to the vibrant village we see today. The heart of the village is just steps away at the intersection of Market Street and Route 9 where the Beekman Arms Inn has stood proudly on the corner for over 250 years. Stand on its front step where FDR would give many of his election day speeches then head next door to see the library he helped design, both inside and out. Finish along South Street at one of the oldest churches in the Hudson Valley, the Dutch Reformed Church whose cemetery dates back to the mid 1700s. You'll leave this experience with a new appreciation for an already exceptional locale. The tour is about an hour long and for a group of up to 6 people. Approximately 1 mile in length.
