After 50+ years of collecting straight razors, Robert A. Doyle will be offering at auction his lifetime collection of fancy and unusual straight razors. Doyle, an Auctioneer/Appraiser/Real Estate Broker, started collecting at 16 years of age and has just turned sixty-seven. When asked why straight razors? Doyle responded, "They are small, beautiful, historic, one-of-a-kind artistic pieces that are nearly impossible to reproduce. There are no 'fakes' to be concerned with." He continued, "It is time to allow others the opportunity to own and enjoy these beautiful shaving tools. The straight razor was the most prized personal tool of men through the ages." Straight Razor. Gilbert Brothers Sheffield. C-1825-35. Very rare heavily carved natural material handle having inlaid escutcheon plate surrounded by an elaborate design of “pique work” pins. Note: Pique work was the art of inlaying tiny silver pins, by hand, into the predrilled holes of the pattern. It was a cottage industry done in homes around the manufacturing city of Sheffield. This artistry was popular from about 1820-1840's. Pique work was performed on horn, pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory and bone. You will not find two identical pieces. Even the pins are set by hand so they are not even in height. See images for damage.
