RITUAL SPOON. Dan people, Ivory Coast. The handle of this ritual spoon is formed by the bust of a woman with typical Dan features consisting of a three-lobed braided hairstyle, three neck rings (symbolic of good health), an ample bosom (symbolic of a nurturing role), and an umbilical hernia (symbolic of maternity). Three is a number associated with good fortune in many African cultures. The upper part of the bowl suggests the hips of a crouching woman, especially when the spoon is viewed from the back. COMMEMORATIVE CLOTH. Mali. There is a tradition in Mali and other African nations to print textiles that commemorate important events or public initiatives sponsored by a government and/or private organization. This textile was printed by COMATEX S.A. MALI and was collected in Bamako. It honors efforts to improve maternal and neo-natal health by drawing attention to La Sage Femme (the midwife) during the Journee Internationale De La Sage Femme (The International Day of the Midwife) and ASFM, Association Des Sages Femmes du Mali (ASFM, the Association of Malian Midwives). The emblem of ASFM displays a pregnant woman undergoing an examination by a midwife under the motto Je Suis Sage Femme (I Am a Midwife). Another slogan reads Le Rôle de la Sage Femme Dans la Réduction de la Mortalité Maternelle et Neo-Natale (The Role of the Midwife in the reduction of Maternal and Neonatal Mortality). The dot-like pattern is formed by the image of a seated infant. Collected in Bamako, Mali. L 70in. W 43in. Cotton.

ASAFO MILITIA COMPANY FLAG. Fante people, Ghana. This exceptional flag expresses the proverb, “Our ship is ready to go. It can carry a load of any size.” It depicts a British sailing ship flying a modified Union Jack with two portholes for cannons on its side. In this context, the Company that displays this flag associates itself with an emblem of European power, announcing that if provoked it is ready to deliver a blow as devastating as the broadside from a large ship. In contrast to at least 95% of Asafo flags which have identical images on both sides, here the fish are white and the potholes are maroon on the obverse side whereas this combination is reversed on the reverse side. The flag is entirely hand sewn with embroidered details and a modified Union Jack. Exhibited at the Free Library Gallery, Philadelphia 2013 and the SMA Fathers Museum of African Art, Tenafly NJ 2014. Published in “Emblems of Power. Asafo Flags from Ghana” 2013 p.72 Fig 60. Collected in Ghana. This book is only available from the authors at ppr2001@med.cornell.edu L 54in. W 33.5in. MAN’S ADINKRA PRESTIGE CLOTH. Ashanti people, Ghana. This traditional man’s robe is worn at various ceremonial events. It consists of six 13 to 15in. panels of golden cotton muslin cloth that are hand sewn using colored cotton yarn. The decorative motif of the cloth consists of 16 different adinkra designs or named Ashanti symbols that were applied to one side of the cloth using stamps carved from dried calabash hulls that are dipped into a special black dye made by boiling the bark of the badee tree in a solution of iron slag. Lines are made with a comb-like device. It takes great skill to avoid dripping the dye onto the cloth while applying the design. Each motif has a different powerful symbolic meaning. This cloth was collected in Ghana in 2003. It was made in the town of Ntonso, Ghana, the center of adinkra production, and was said to have belonged to a royal family. The cloth is watermarked “United Africa Company”, Made in Ghana”, and Vat Dyed”. Exhibited at the Pen and Brush Gallery New York 2005. L 135.5in. W 84in. See Gillow 2003 pp. 88-90.

OLD TAKPEKPO ANLOGA (“FINGERS”) MAN’S WRAP. Ewe people, Ghana. An example of this exceedingly rare cloth is illustrated in “West African Weaving” by Venice Lamb, the renowned scholar of West African textiles, with the following legend: “The pattern has been achieved by the use of inlay incorporated in the tabby weave through the tapestry method. This is a rather unusual cloth of which I have myself seen only two examples”. It consists of 18 hand woven, hand sewn strips. Collected in Accra, Ghana in 2005. L 148in. W 70in. Cotton.

WOMAN’S WRAP WITH “SCRIPTURES”. Ewe people, Ghana. The unusual decorative design on this soft, tightly woven cloth consists of a series of diamond-shaped areas formed by rectangular orange and blue blocks. It is a remarkable feat to weave the blocks in positions in individual strips that create the diamond shape when the strips are assembled to create the cloth. “Scriptures” enclosed in the diamonds include traditional stools. The cloth consists of 13 hand woven, hand sewn strips. L 67 in. W 42in. Cotton.

KING’S FUNERAL CLOTH WITH “SCRIPTURES”. Ewe people, Ghana. The somber black color of this extraordinary cloth is relieved by randomly distributed copper-colored threads. As a result, the cloth seems to shimmer in sunlight. This dramatic effect is heightened by brightly colored “scriptures” including umbrellas and a comb that have symbolic significance. Said to have been woven by Kwame Anyo in the 1950’s, it consists of 20 hand woven, hand sewn strips. L 114in. W 78in. Cotton and rayon thread in some “scriptures”.

MOUKOUJI SOCIETY FEMALE FIGURE. Punu people, Gabon. The dynamic stance of this statue results from legs bent at the knees and arms flexed at the elbows in parallel. A figure such as this would appear in ceremonies for defense against witchcraft and malevolent forest spirits. The facial features and hair style duplicate the features of the well-known traditional Punu Okuy face mask. The relatively large feet, abdominal and facial scarifications, and white pigment are typical for a Moukouji Society figure. H 21in. W 6in. Wood, pigment. See Bacquart 1998 pp. 116-117.
