#84 – MOUKOUJI SOCIETY FEMALE FIGURE. Punu people, Gabon. The dynamic stance of this statue results from legs bent at the knees and arms flexed at the elbows in parallel. A figure such as this would appear in ceremonies for defense against witchcraft and malevolent forest spirits. The facial features and hair style duplicate the features of the well-known traditional Punu Okuy face mask. The relatively large feet, abdominal and facial scarifications, and white pigment are typical for a Moukouji Society figure. H 21in. W 6in. Wood, pigment. See Bacquart 1998 pp. 116-117.
