Private Tour of the Akin Free Library & Natural History Museum, Pawling, NY

Standing majestically in this quiet corner of Dutchess County, the Akin Free Library is truly a hidden gem. Named for its original benefactor, businessman and philanthropist Albert J. Akin, Akin Free Library opened in 1908 as a library and community center for the Quaker Hill community.

Taking over 10 years to construct, the large stone Victorian building was designed by famed architect John A. Wood who would also design the Mizzen Top Hotel that stood just down the road. The building features a copper cornice and clock tower that echoes many of Wood's famous Revival designs. The first floor of the building showcases the beautiful woodwork and large open rooms that are a trademark of the building. The second floor houses the Quaker Hill Historical Society with many artifacts from pre-colonial communities, early colonial settlement through the famous families that called the area home.

The true treasure is in the basement that houses the Olive Mason Gunnison Natural History Museum. Collected over decades, the collection includes animals, birds, insects, marine life, minerals, fossils and other antiquities, artifacts and of course celestial bodies. Collection highlights include a 10-lb. piece of optical quality quartz from Brazil, a collection of over 175 different birds' eggs and about 50 nests, and several specimens of now-extinct animals: the passenger pigeon, the heath hen, and the ivory-billed woodpecker. Also included in the museum is the "cabinet of curiosities", which emphasizes unique and unexpected items. A remarkable collection that is sure to achieve its main goal to startle and delight the visitor! Enjoy a Private Tour for up to six people. Value $150.
