Straight Razor. Cut-A-Way. C-1850-70. The wedge blade is fully etched with scroll surrounding “I AM THE CUT FOR A CORNISH MAN.” (The Cornish people or Cornish (Cornish: Kernowyon) are an ethnic group native to, or associated with Cornwall and a recognised national minority in the United Kingdom, which can trace its roots to the ancient Britons who inhabited southern and central Great Britain before the Roman conquest.) I have never seen this etching on another razor. The Whalebone handle is decorated with the red dot code of Henry Lummus and bears his inventory number “1005.” Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920. Lummus wrote articles on straight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. The red dot pattern was some type of code that Henry applied to many of his straight razors. Although I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago, and tried to review all the designs to try and find what they had in common, I could not break the code.

#106 – Straight Razor. Manufactured By Wade & Butcher Sheffield. C-1840-60. Black Buffalo horn handle. The large, heavy wedge blade is etched "S.L. Bradley Auburn,NY". Silas L. Bradley (1817- 1883) Merchant and banker. Silas Bradley was best known as President of the National Bank of Auburn, a position he held from 1877 until his death in 1883. He was a successful businessman and was active in civic affairs. He was a City Alderman in 1852. At the time of his death he was a Trustee of the Auburn Savings Bank, the Orphan Asylum, and the Auburn Water Works. Mr. Bradley was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church. He was ordained an Elder in 1854.The family home was at 200 Genesee Street, the present location of Pettigrass Funeral Home. After Mr. Bradley's death, Mrs. Bradley continued to live at 200 Genesee Street until her death in 1890. S.L. Bradley were main contributors to Harriet Tubman and the Publishing of her books regarding the Underground Railroad. Auburn, NY Was also her home and where her Museum is located. I feel that this Straight Razor is extremely rare and I doubt you will find another. Mr. Silas Bradley’s wife Jane Loomis Bradley donated funds for construction of the Bradley Memorial Chapel in 1893, at the entrance of historic Fort Hill Cemetery. The chapel was designed my renowned architect, Julius Schweinfurth. The Bradleys, Harriet Tubman and William H. Seward are all buried in Fort Hill. Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross, c.'1822 – March 10, 1913) was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved people, family and friends,[2]using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
