Straight Razor. PISA. extremely rare 18thC, 1700’s razor having a beautiful select horn handle with squared ends and fancy pin covers. This Handle material is the rarest that you will find on an early Razor. I have witnessed five, including the folding straight razor carried by the Duke of Marlborough. All five that I have encountered over the past 50 years, I kept. You will search for many years and most likely will never find one. I do not know why this "select horn" is so rare. It must have been extremely hard to find this kind of grain on a single horn.

Straight Razor. T. Hessen & Bruch Co. with symbol of a Bear. “Perfection Warranted.” Ornate cast aluminum handle having a pattern of raised scroll and a Bear with words “Will Bear Inspection” on front. Pile side with raised scroll and a beautiful woman. Figural cast aluminum handled straight razors are quite rare as aluminum was a new and expensive alloy at the time these Art Nouveau razors were popular. This would have been the top of their line for this maker.

Straight Razor. John Shaw’s Celebrated Razor Set Ready For Use. Rare maker. C-1840. Black Buffalo horn handle with pewter head end cap with inlaid Mother of Pearl  “shield.” The number is an inventory number from the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920. Lummus wrote articles on straight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. The red dot pattern was some type of code that Henry applied to many of his straight razors. Although I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago, and tried to review all the designs in an attempt to find what they had in common, I could not break the code.

Straight Razor. Manufactured By Wade & Butcher Sheffield. C-1830-40. Very unusually shaped blade is stamped “Superior Feather Edge Concave Razor.” Genuine stag handle has a pewter end cap. This razor was illustrated, bottom of page 31, in "Straight Razor Collecting, An Illustrated Price Guide," By Robert A. Doyle published in 1980." Stag is very rarely found on straight razor handles. If you have been buying straight razors in the first couple of sessions from my collection, you have had an opportunity to purchase a few already. In the fifty plus years of collecting, I kept all the stag I could find. They are now coming on the market for the first time in this Century.

Below this is stamped “Diamond Edge Razor.” The black Buffalo handle has an inlaid mother of pearl escutcheon and an inlaid perimeter of silver wire. The number 1287 is the Henry T. Lummus inventory number. It is believed that the Lummus collection originally had approximately 1,500 examples of pre-20thC razors. Five hundred were donated to the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. I purchased five hundred pieces from the Estate. Five hundred more that were circulating for sale in the 1930’s have not shown up to my knowledge anywhere.
