UNUSUAL SNAKE-FORM CURRENCY. Kirdi people, Cameroon and Nigeria. The term Kirdi refers to a group of tribes who have not adopted the Islamic religion in the border region between Cameroon and Nigeria. The object has been installed in the custom base with the small head of the snake pointed downward and the coiled tail at the top. The head end of the snake is wrapped with iron bands. BAR CURRENCY. Iron and copper bars were an important medium of exchange in West and Central Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The value of these bars derived from their convertibility by blacksmiths into tools, weapons, and decorative objects such as jewelry. Although initially imported by European traders, in time much of the bar currency in Africa was made from locally smelted iron and copper ore.
