Straight razor. “Allen” Sheffield. C-1830’s. Wedge blade stamped across the top “THE CELEBRATED FINE INDIA STEEL.” The center of the blade stamped “DIAMOND EDGE RAZOR.” Carved and shaped one piece Folk Art wood handle has a copper pin cover at tang end. Note: Replacement Fold Art wood handles have been witnessed on 19thC straight razor blades as a testament to the frugality of shavers. Often it was the “wedge” blade itself that caused the breakage if the blade was closed too far or the handle material was too fragile for the blade (ivory, tortoiseshell, pearl or thin horn scales). These wood handles were very well crafted, sometimes utilizing the original spacer and,or pins. For the past fifty years of collecting, I have not sold any of my Folk Art Handled Razors. However, they will be coming on the market now with the auction sale of my collection.

Straight razors. Very rare Civil War Motif pair. GEORGE WOSTENHOLM CELEBRATED I*XL RAZOR, WASHINGTON WORKS, SHEFFIELD. Black Buffalo horn handles. The wedge blades are both fully etched “THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED.” Ironic that Straight Razors Manufactured in England would push for preservation of the “Union” of the United States of America. However, everything was about marketing to make sales. The only pair I have ever seen with this etching. These were illustrated in an article I did back in the 1980’s for American Blade magazine.

Matched pair of Presentation straight razors. SAM’L PARKER MAK’R SHEFFIELD (Rare maker). C-1840’s. Both matching wedge blades are etched with a full length figure of a man wearing a Mason’s apron (Masonic) with the words MADE EXPRESSLY FOR J. S. O’BRIEN AUCTIONEER. He was an Auctioneer in Ireland during the time of the potato famine when thousands of Irish were starving and immigrating to America. I quickly found this on an internet search: “1848 1st May (CJ). Ennistymon--- The Levelling System. Our Ennistymon correspondent writes as follows: - “On Easter Wednesday the Sub-Sheriff accompanied by J. S. O’Brien, agent to the property, and a large posse of Police, came to the lands of Lahensy, near Ennistymon. (Being the fifth or sixth visit since Christmas) to serve habere and throw down houses. So expert are they, from practice....that it requires but a short time to evict many families, and tumble down their dwellings......” Most of the Real Estate in Ireland & New Zealand sells at Auction. This newspaper clipping has O’Brien as the Agent handling the foreclosure sale for the Sheriff in 1848. He must have been very successful as an Auctioneer to end up with his own personalized pair of razors. Black horn handles.

Straight razor. Wade & Butcher “For Barber’s Use.” Massive Blade with wood handle. Although this could be an original wood handle. In my opinion, the handle is a custom made replacement Folk Art handle utilizing all the original hardware from the original, which was most likely black Buffalo horn. These heavy, wide blades razors  were popular with the Irish immigrants of the mid 1800’s. Note: Replacement Folk Art wood handles have been witnessed on 19thC straight razor blades as a testament to the frugality of shavers. Straight razor. W(crown)R" dating the manufacturing date to between 1830-37 for King William of England. WADE & BUTCHER. This is a rare wood Handled Razor from the Henry T. Lummus Collection with his inventory number “1473” carved in red on pile side by head pin. The number is an inventory number from the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920. Lummus wrote articles on straight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. The red dot pattern was some type of code that Henry applied to many of his straight razors. Although I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago, and tried to review all the designs to try and find what they had in common, I could not break the code.

#52 – A collection of 10 different straight razors from the famous Henry T. Lummus Collection all having genuine black Buffalo horn handles. The number is an inventory number from the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920. Lummus wrote articles on straight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. He lived in Lynn, Mass and was the youngest Supreme Court Judge in Mass. at the time. The red dot pattern was some type of code that Henry applied to many of his straight razors. Although I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago, and tried to review all the designs to try and find what they had in common, I could not break the code. The scratched inventory number on the pile side head end identifies a razor as part of the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920.  See details of each in the multiple photos. Note: the slotted display case does not go with the sale of the razors. There are a few very unique, unusual and rare etchings and makers in this assortment. There are a variety of blade patterns. Collection assembled before 1920. https://www.mass.gov/person/henry-tilton-lummus From the above article: “Justice Lummus was an outspoken and forceful speaker when occasion required. He was distinguished in personal appearance and bearing. He was interested in antiques, particularly in old razors and furniture, of which he had an extensive private collection.” “Henry Tilton Lummus was born in Lynn, December 28, 1876, the son of William and Louisa Mitchell (Brown) Lummus. He attended the Lynn schools, was graduated from the Lynn Classical High School in 1894, and from the Boston University Law School in 1897, heading his class and receiving the degree of Bachelor of Laws, summa cum laude.” He died in 1960 at the age of 84. A collection of 10 different American made “Durham Duplex transitional straight razors having celluloid handles. American made straight razors are desirable. These transitional razors were early examples of the safety razor that would eventually surpass the straight razor as the favorite shaving tool in the early 20th Century. Very rare, single carved ivory handled 7 Day set having elaborate “pique work” around the inlaid German Silver escutcheon plate. C-1820’s. All matching stamped blades are fitted in the paper covered wood case with full advertising on the cover “CELEBRATED CASED SEVEN DAY RAZORS SUPERIOR TO ANYTHING OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC. The center is decorated nicely with animal figures. These one Handled seven day sets are extremely rare and were produced for a very short period of time, approximately 1820-1840. Further, each locking device corresponds with the specific shaped tang that fits it. You could not lock these blades into the handle of any other similar set. You will be hard pressed to find a better, fancier one handle 7-Day set. Note: Pique work was the art of inlaying tiny silver pins, by hand, into the predrilled holes of the pattern. It was a cottage industry done in homes around the manufacturing city of Sheffield. This artistry was popular from about 1820-1840's. Pique work was performed on horn, pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory and bone. You will not find two identical pieces. Even the pins are set by hand so they are not even in height.
