Straight Razor. Manufactured By Wade & Butcher Sheffield. C-1840-60. Black Buffalo horn handle. The large, heavy wedge blade is etched "S.L. Bradley Auburn,NY". Silas L. Bradley (1817- 1883) Merchant and banker. Silas Bradley was best known as President of the National Bank of Auburn, a position he held from 1877 until his death in 1883. He was a successful businessman and was active in civic affairs. He was a City Alderman in 1852. At the time of his death he was a Trustee of the Auburn Savings Bank, the Orphan Asylum, and the Auburn Water Works. Mr. Bradley was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church. He was ordained an Elder in 1854.The family home was at 200 Genesee Street, the present location of Pettigrass Funeral Home. After Mr. Bradley's death, Mrs. Bradley continued to live at 200 Genesee Street until her death in 1890. S.L. Bradley were main contributors to Harriet Tubman and the Publishing of her books regarding the Underground Railroad. Auburn, NY Was also her home and where her Museum is located. I feel that this Straight Razor is extremely rare and I doubt you will find another. Mr. Silas Bradley’s wife Jane Loomis Bradley donated funds for construction of the Bradley Memorial Chapel in 1893, at the entrance of historic Fort Hill Cemetery. The chapel was designed my renowned architect, Julius Schweinfurth. The Bradleys, Harriet Tubman and William H. Seward are all buried in Fort Hill. Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross, c.?1822 – March 10, 1913) was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved people, family and friends,[2]using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
