#521 – Four Keane framed prints, titles incl "At The Fair", "Rejected', "Best Friend", and "Watching", all signed lower left "Keane", sizes range from 13" x 7" to 24.5" x 10.5", two having plaques and one matted. Bio from AskArt: Walter Keane (1915-2000) born in Lincoln, Nebraska, became a highly-popular artist post World War II who was credited as a figure painter of wide-eyed "lost" children, waif-like and sympathy provoking. These images were reproduced throughout the world with originals in many collections including the United Nations, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, Spain, and the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, Japan. From 1946 to 1947, he went to Berlin where he began his signature theme of "Lost Children." These paintings were inspired by his shock at seeing the thousands of war-orphaned, poverty-stricken children. He married his wife, Margaret, also an artist, and they lived in Oakland, and became public personalities because his work was collected by so many movie stars. By 1956, he and Margaret opened a gallery at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, and again his work got much attention. Shortly after, the couple returned to San Francisco where they had a gallery at for two years and then opened a gallery in New York City. Again he had many collectors but also received criticism for being repetitious with every canvas having a "lost" child. Margaret Keane (born 1927) is an American artist. She is an illustrator and painter, and mainly draws women and children in oil or mixed media. Her works are instantly recognizable from the doe-eyed children that are depicted in the drawings. In the 1960s, Margaret Keane's artwork was sold under the name of her husband, Walter Keane. He locked her in a room and forced her to paint, while taking credit for her work. Conflict over that issue was cited as one of the reasons they divorced. Neither wanting to relinquish rights to the artwork, Walter and Margaret's divorce proceedings went all the way to federal court. At the hearing, Margaret created a painting in front of the judge to prove that she was the artist. Walter declined to paint before the court, citing a sore shoulder. In 1986, the courts sided with her, enabling her to paint under her own name. In 2014, their story became a movie titled "Big Eyes" directed by Tim Burton.

#530 – Basilius Besler framed and matted print under glass of "Cnicus Sativus Chamemelum Romanum flore multiplici Chamemelum Romanum flore simplici", marked on bottom "Besler 1613", 32.5" x 28.5". Bio from AskArt: Basilius Besler (1561-1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, best known for his monumental Hortus Eystettensis. He was curator of the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, Prince Bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The gardens surrounded the bishop's palace, Willibaldsburg, which was built on a hill overlooking the town. These gardens had been started in 1596 and designed by Besler's colleague, Joachim Camerarius the Younger (1534-1598), a physician and botanist. Upon Camerarius' death in 1598, Besler had the remainder of Camerarius' plants moved to Eichstätt and carried on the work of planting and supervision. The bishop commissioned Besler to compile a codex of the plants growing in his garden, a task which Besler took sixteen years to complete, the bishop dying shortly before the work was published. The work was named Hortus Eystettensis (Garden of Eichstätt). The plates were of garden flowers, herbs and vegetables, exotic plants. These were depicted near life-size, producing rich detail. The work generally reflected the four seasons, showing first the flowering and then the fruiting stages. "Winter" was sparsely represented with a mere 7 plates. "Spring" was a season of abundance with 134 plates illustrating 454 plants and "Summer" in full swing showed 505 plants on 184 plates. "Autumn" closed off the work with 42 plates and 98 species. Descriptions of the plants were in Latin and showed remarkable anticipation of the binomial system, in that the captions often consisted of the first two or three words of the description. The work was published twice more in Nuremberg, in 1640 and 1713, using the same plates, plates which were destroyed by the Royal Mint of Munich in 1817. The gardens were sacked by invading Swedish troops under Herzog Bernhard von Weimar in 1633-4; following Hortus Eystettensis they have been reconstructed and opened to the public in 1998.

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner lithograph of Brooklyn Bridge with Manhattan in the background, signed lower right "Elizabeth O'Neill Verner", 7.5" x 10.25". Bio from AskArt: Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (1883-1979) artistic gifts were encouraged and developed by her maternal grandfather, Henry Franklin Baker, who had been a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, a Charleston artist. After graduating in 1900 from Ursuline College in Columbia, South Carolina, Elizabeth enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She fell under the influence of Thomas Anschutz, and his encouragement caused her to work hard at her technique. After two years she left, and taught for a year in Aiken, South Carolina, before returning to Charleston, where she lived out her life. In 1923 one of her etchings won third prize at the Charleston County Fair, a humble beginning for one who was to achieve a national reputation. A trip to Europe included studying at the Central School of Fine Arts in London in 1930. A trip to New York City in 1932 resulted in the sale of drawings to Rockefeller Center, and of twelve others for reproduction as postcards.

Norma Bassett Hall signed color wood block matted of landscape scene titled "Haystack Rock" signed lower right "Norma Bassett Hall", 5" x 6". Bio from AskArt: Norma Bassett Hall (1889-1957) was most remembered as a woodblock printmaker and one of the founding members of the Prairie Printmakers, Norma Bassett Hall was the only woman member of that group and the only one to establish a reputation exclusively with color prints. Her interest in woodblock printmaking dated from 1922 when she was on a Cannon Beach, Oregon honeymoon trip. The couple decided to make a pictorial visit of their trip by copying block prints from a book, and she saw what she described as the "real possibilities" of block printmaking. She used the Oriental method, which is the mixing of dry color with water and rice-flour paste. She learned the Japanese woodcut print method on rice paper involving transparent watercolors, which for Hall was a redirection from opaque oil base colors. Adopting this approach exclusively for many years, Hall printed with as many as six or seven colors, each requiring a separate hand cut woodblock. Hall's prints are signed in the bottom right-hand corner, with the edition number printed beneath the lower left side of the image.

Bio from Wikipedia: Andrew Kay Womrath (1869–1939) was an American artist who became well known in France, although he was not widely recognized in the United States. He moved to London to study, and then went to Paris, working in both cities for several years. He studied under Urushibara Mokuchu, who bought many of his works. He often worked in advertising. Womrath's work includes drawings, woodblocks and watercolors. His only known poster is an advertisement for a January 1897 exhibition of the Salon des Cent in Paris. It depicts a woman (Gertrude A. Kay ?) leafing through prints beside a somewhat Bohemian-looking man who is admiring a vase. In April 1896 a number of his drawings and book plates were exhibited in the Champs de Mars Salon. A reviewer in 1902 placed Andrew Kay Womrath in what he called the "Pictorial" group. Some of his colored woodcuts are now held in the British Museum

Pablo Picasso framed and matted print on canvas of Don Quixote signed lower left "Picasso 11.3.55", 20.5" x 26.25". Bio from AskArt: Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was born in Spain and lived most of his life there and in France. By the age of fourteen, he was an accomplished draftsman. There he studied the "Old Masters" and classical sculpture and also was exposed to the paintings of "Impressionists" and "Post Impressionists". Between 1901 and 1904, his work was dominated by a blue palette, which has led to this time being called his "Blue Period". Blue, for him, was to symbolize the ". . . suffering-frequently hunger and cold, the hardships he experienced while attempting to establish himself." The 1920s are regarded as one of the most productive periods of Picasso's career. In 1937, inspired by the Spanish Civil War, he painted Guernica, which is regarded as one of his landmark paintings and certainly one that carried a strong message of human suffering during wartime.
