AskArt Bio: A painter in the tradition of the Hudson River School, led by Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt, Jesse Talbot was a landscape, portrait and figure painter. From 1844 to 1847, he lived in Patterson, New Jersey, his birthplace. From 1865 to 1873 he was in New York City, and then lived in Roundout, New York, and Hartford, Connecticut. In Talbot's landscape paintings he, adhering to the tenets of the Hudson River School group, strove to express spirituality through landscape imagery. Much of his inspiration came from the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Recognizing the cultural distinction Talbot had brought to that region, curators of the Saco Museum of Saco, Maine in 2009 had an exhibition that included him. Titled ''A Treasured Ten: A Decade of Collecting at the Saco Museum'', it was a tribute to the artistic tradition of the Saco River Valley, which connected Maine's coast to the New Hampshire White Mountains. Promotional text read: ''From fantastical scenes to sensitive portraiture, these paintings demonstrate the breadth of influence and subject matter embraced by our 19th-century artists.'' Talbot's entry was a luminous landscape, Tropical Scenery, Early Morning dated 1850. A painting by Jesse Talbot titled Minnehaha Falls indicates he also traveled to the northwest and was in the Minneapolis area of Minnesota. However, the work is undated so it is not possible to trace his steps by using this work. (His paintings have sold for as high as $288,000.00.)

AskArt Bio: Born in Newport, Rhode Island, George Brewerton was a sketch artist, journalist, pastor, author, and army officer. As an early sketch artist, he was in California in 1847 and 1848 during the Mexican/American War. However, he became best known as a painter of western landscapes in oil and pastel. He was born in Newport, Rhode Island and raised throughout the Northeast as the family followed his father who was a Brigadier General and who from 1845 to 1852, was superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. During this time, young Brewerton studied with Robert Weir, who was then the drawing master at West Point. He also trained for a military career at West Point, and in 1846 sailed to California as a volunteer with the army when war with Mexico was imminent. They arrived in San Francisco Bay during March/April, 1847. Shortly after he went to Vera Cruz, Mexico. In 1848, he was ordered to Los Angeles, where he met Kit Carson, and the two left for Independence, Missouri traveling overland through Arizona and New Mexico where Brewerton became ill and had to stay behind while Carson completed the trip. Subsequent assignments for Brewerton included Fort McIntosh, near Laredo, Texas and Ringgold Barracks near Rio Grande City. In 1852, Brewerton resigned from the army and returned to journalism, becoming a special correspondent for the New York Times. His accounts of his trip with Carson appeared there and in Harper's Monthly and the New York Herald. In 1853, Brewerton wrote an article about his experiences on this stay in Taos published in Harper's magazine. Brewerton was a Yankee Protestant, and his attitudes reflected the anti-Mexican attitudes prevalent after the Mexican War. He wrote of Taos: ''its inhabitants exhibit all the indolent, lounging characteristics of the lower order of Mexicans, the utter want both of moral and mental culture'' (Samuels 65). In 1854, he went to Kansas to report on events that subsequently led to the Civil War and read law in the office of a lawyer and was admitted to the Kansas Bar. Shortly after he moved to New York and exhibited his views and paintings at the National Academy of Design. His exhibited works indicate he traveled and painted widely from California to the Tropics including the Adirondack, Catskill, and White mountains and along the New England coast to Maine and the Bay of Fundy as well as to Ireland. By 1858, he was helping his father fortify forts in South Carolina. During the Civil War, manuals illustrated and written by Brewerton were used widely for the instruction of recruits, and he served on the staff of a militia unit. During 1866-67, he was pastor of a Baptist Church in Annville, Pennsylvania, and then he settled in Brooklyn where he wrote books and poetry and illustrated books including History of Washington by Julian Hawthorne. He spent much time in Newport painting marines and landscapes and continued to travel in the New Mexico, Arizona, and California. He died in Fordham, New York in 1901. (His paintings have sold for as high as $13,800.)

AskArt Bio: John Carleton Wiggins was a pastoral landscape painter usually depicted with flocks of sheep or herds of cattle. His birth name was John Carleton Wiggins, but he preferred not to use his first name of John. He was born in Turner, Orange County, New York 1848 and raised in Brooklyn where he attended public schools and studied with George Inness. Some biographies indicate he studied at the National Academy of Design, but the Academy has no record of his attendance. However, their records do indicate that between 1866 to 1880, he exhibited at the Academy's annual exhibitions. In 1890, he was elected as an Associate member of the National Academy, and made an Academician in 1906. Beginning 1880, Wiggins spent several years painting and studying in Europe and England, but was primarily in France, developing plein-air painting skills at Barbizon and Fontainebleau. These years influenced his subsequent style and subject matter as he changed from pure landscape painting to landscapes with ''broadly brushed images of cattle and sheep''. (Davis, 584). He won a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1894, and exhibited regularly at London's Royal Academy. He also studied in Holland. Returning to New York, he maintained a studio in Greenwich Village, and was influenced by John H. Cocks, a Brooklyn sculptor and landscape painter. By 1904, Wiggins moved his primary residence to Old Lyme, Connecticut, which had been the place he and his family had spent their summers. There he became a founder of the Old Lyme Art Colony, which grew to be a center of American Impressionism. Many of his paintings, with subtle lights and shadows, warm colors and soft edges, reflected his inspiration of the countryside of Old Lyme. It was a natural setting for artists, whose work like that of Wiggins, made obvious the influence of the French Barbizon painters. Carleton Wiggins also founded an art school in Old Lyme. His works can be seen in many collections and museums, including the National Gallery of Art, Lotus Club, Corcoran Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Carleton Wiggins died in 1932, in Old Lyme, Connecticut. (His paintings have sold for as high as $33,000.)

Wikipedia: Chillon began as a Roman outpost, guarding the strategic road through the Alpine passes.[2] The later history of Chillon was influenced by three major periods: the Savoy Period, the Bernese Period, and the Vaudois Period.[3] Savoy period Edit Arms of the House of Savoy The oldest parts of the castle have not been definitively dated, but the first written record of the castle is in 1005.[4] It was built to control the road from Burgundy to the Great Saint Bernard Pass[5] From the mid 12th century, the castle was summer home to the Counts of Savoy, who kept a fleet of ships on Lake Geneva. The castle was greatly expanded in 1248[6] by Peter II.[7] Chillon as a prison Edit During the 16th century Wars of Religion, it was used by the dukes of Savoy to house prisoners. Its most famous prisoner was probably François de Bonivard, a Genevois monk, prior of St. Victor in Geneva and politician who was imprisoned there in 1530 for defending his homeland from the dukes of Savoy.[8] Bernese period Edit Over his six-year term, de Bonivard paced as far as his chain would allow, and the chain and rut are still visible. He was rescued in 1536 by his countrymen and Bernese, who took the castle by force. The prison was residence for Bernese bailiff until Chillon was converted into a state prison in 1733.[9] Vaudois period Edit In 1798, the French-speaking canton of Vaud drove out the German-speaking Bernese authorities and declared the Lemanic Republic. The Vaudois invited in French troops to help them maintain autonomy from the other Swiss. When the French moved in and occupied, Chillon was used as a munitions and weapons depot.[10] Today Edit Today, Chillon is currently open to the public for visits and tours. According to the castle website, Chillon is listed as "Switzerland's most visited historic monument".[11] There is a fee for entrance and there are both parking spaces and a bus stop nearby for travel. Inside the castle there are several recreations of the interiors of some of the main rooms including the grand bedroom, hall, and cave stores. Inside the castle itself there are four great halls, three courtyards, and a series of bedrooms open to the public. One of the oldest is the Camera domini, which was a room occupied by the Duke of Savoy-it is decorated with 14th Century medieval murals.

AskArt Bio: JOHN FLEMING GOULD (1906-1996) John Fleming Gould was born February 14, 1906 in Worcester, Massachusetts. His parents were Julia E. Gould and George M. Gould. The father was a plumber. They lived at 39 Richards Street. At first there were two boys, John, and his older brother George. George died of a childhood illness at the age of six in 1911. In 1912 the family moved to Illinois, where their son Robert was born, and in 1915 they moved to Brooklyn, NY, where their daughter Marian was born. They lived at 1502 Bushwick Avenue. The father worked as a plumber throughout the neighborhood, and he was often hired by the janitor of the building two-doors away at 1498 Bushwick, named Henry Baumhofer. That janitor's thirteen-year-old son was Walt Baumhofer, who became John's best friend. They went to school together and played together after school. Their lives changed abruptly during one of their escapades when they found a box of live ammunition. While attempting mischief one round exploded and blew off Baumhofer's thumb and parts of two fingers on his left hand. According to Gould, "Up until then Walt was the musician and I was the artist, but after the accident I encouraged him to become an artist instead. What other work could he do with only one hand!" They later attended Bushwick High School on Irving Avenue and Woodbine Streets in Brooklyn. There they met Frank Kramer and William Ralph Keifer, both of whose fathers happened to be janitors at other public schools. All four students were German-Americans with natural drawing talent and a shared ambition to become wealthy illustrators. In his senior year John Gould was elected President of the Class. After graduation all four attended the Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, where they studied under Dean Cornwell and H. Winfield Scott. After graduating in 1926 he and Baumhofer, and seven other young artists, rented a Manhattan art studio on the top floor of 161 West 23rd Street. The monthly rent was ninety dollars. They soon met their new neighbors, George and Jerome Rozen, who rented the art studio next-door. In 1927 J. F. Gould began illustrating interior stories for pulp magazines, such as Aces, Air Stories, Astounding Stories, Blue Book, Clues Detective, Cowboy Stories, Danger Trails, War Birds and Wings. In 1929 he was hired to teach art at Pratt Institute, where he continued to work for twenty-two years. In 1930 he began a long and fruitful freelance relationship with Popular Publications drawing interior story illustrations for their pulp magazines, such as Detective Action Stories, Dime Detective, G-8 and his Battle Aces, Operator #5, Knockout, The Spider and 10-Story Western. In 1940 he married his wife, Mary Gould. They raised three sons, Robert, William, and Paul. By 1942 he was selling freelance illustrations to higher-paying slick magazines, such as The Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, Redbook, Colliers and Popular Science. In 1951 John Fleming Gould began to teach art at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. Throughout the 1950s he worked for men's adventure magazines, such as Argosy, Outdoor Life and True. In 1957 he retired from illustration and moved to Newburgh, NY, to open his own private art school and art gallery. John Fleming Gould died in New Windsor, NY, at the age of ninety on May 26, 1996.

AskArt Bio: Frances (''Fanny'') Flora Bond Palmer (l812-1876) was one of the premier artists for Currier & Ives, the most famous publishers of lithographic prints in mid-nineteenth century America. She is generally regarded as the leading American woman lithographer of her time. Born in Leicester, England, the daughter of an attorney, she received an excellent education at a school for girls in Leicester, run by Mary Linwood (herself a well-known stitchery artist). After marrying Edmund Seymour Palmer in l832 and bearing a daughter and son, she and her husband opened a lithography business in Leicester around l842 under the company name ''F. & S. Palmer''. Fanny was the principal artist and lithographer, and Edmund was primarily the printer, although he may have done some lithography as well. The Palmers immigrated to the United States late in l843, settling in New York City, where they continued to produce a great variety of lithographs for other publishers, as well as in their own name. Around l849, after they moved to Brooklyn, Nathaniel Currier hired Mrs. Palmer as a staff artist and Mr. Palmer dropped out of the business. He died in l857 from a fall downstairs, attributed by colleagues and friends to alcoholism. From that time forward Fanny remained the principal support of her children, granddaughter and sister Maria Bond. ''F. F. Palmer'' became one of the most prolific artists at Currier & Ives, producing more than two-hundred prints portraying a wide range of subjects, including farm and suburban scenes, sporting and marine prints, still life, literary subjects, panoramic views of steamboats, railroad trains, the Civil War, and the westward movement. A large body of work bearing her name was entirely original; drawn or painted and lithographed by her as well. In some cases they were signed ''from nature and on stone'', indicating that they were taken directly from on-site sketches. However, lithography was a commercial operation and the versatile artist, adept at every aspect of her trade, was assigned a varying role. Sometimes she originated the drawing or painting and other lithographers transferred it onto stone. At other times she lithographed or adapted the work of other artists and printmakers. In those cases the original artist's name was usually indicated on the print, and she was listed as ''F. F. Palmer, lith.''. As in film, television and advertising today, lithography was often a collaborative effort, and Palmer provided backgrounds and landscapes to which other artists at the company added the figures. Currier's partner, James Ives, seems to have played a role in the conception or lithographing of some of her later prints; his name appears on them along with hers. Fanny Palmer's prints were, and still remain, among the most popular images issued by Currier & Ives. In her day they hung on the walls of thousands of homes and businesses, and have been reproduced on calendars, cards and prints ever since. Some have become national icons, embodying the dreams and aspirations of the expanding young United States.
