Straight razor. OLD ENGLISH. C-1830. The wedge blade is etched PATENT TEMPERED STEEL. The handle is an early handmade wood folk art example. Note: Replacement Fold Art wood handles have been witnessed on 19thCStraight razor blades as a testament to the frugality of shavers. Often it was the ?wedge? blade itself that caused the breakage if the blade was closed too far or the handle material was too fragile for the blade (ivory, tortoiseshell, pearl or thin horn scales). These wood handles were very well crafted, sometimes utilizing the original spacer and,or pins. For the past fifty years of collecting, I have not sold any of my Folk Art Handled Razors. However, they will be coming on the market now with the auction sale of my collection.

Straight razor. Marples & Co. Mary St. Sheffield. I have not seen this maker before. Blade is fully etched. The black horn handle has the red dot code indicating that it was from the Henry Lummus Collection. ?838? is the inventory number from the Henry T. Lummus Collection assembled before 1920. Lummus wrote articles onStraight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. The red dot pattern was some type of code that Henry applied to many of hisStraight razors. Although I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago, and tried to review all the designs to try and find what they had in common, I could not break the code. https://www.mass.gov/person/henry-tilton-lummus
