#23 – Cased Matched Pair of Scrimshawed Straight Razors stamped “RODGERS REFINED STEEL PATENT TEMPER having heavy wedge blades. The natural handles are scrimshawed “Jacob Justice No 1 and No 2.” C-1815. The pair are fitted in a flat, lined presentation case. I was told that the family was from Pennsylvania. Here is what I found, “ Jacob Justice was one of six brothers, sons of John Justice. He was born in Franklin County, PA in 1757. He enlisted in the Sixth Pennsylvania Battalion of the Continental Line on January 20, 1776 (he being then nineteen years of age), and served until the close of the war with England. After the independence of the Colonies was established, he returned to his home in Franklin County and remained there until 1797, when he removed West, with the intention of settling in what is now Lawrence County; but on account of Indian troubles he stopped in Washington County for about two years, and in 1799 carried out his original design, and settled in the southeastern part of North Beaver Township, on land which he drew for his services as a Revolutionary soldier. His family consisted of his wife and seven children, six sons and one daughter-James, John, Joseph, George, Matthew, Scott and Eliza. Jacob Justice lived on his farm in North Beaver Township until his death, which occurred in April, 1829, he being seventy-two years old. He was buried in the graveyard of the Westfield Presbyterian Church.“ (Source: North Beaver Township, Lawrence County, Pa History).

Cased Matched Pair of Mother of Pearl handled JOHN HEIFFOR 3 PARADISE SQUARE SHEFFIELD” Straight Razors. The handles are solid one piece pearl not reinforced as the pearl is heavy and solid. The heavy wedge blades are ornately worked along the top. The oval embossed leather presentation case has a monogrammed metal escutcheon plate with a reclining lion. Note the inventory number of 1348 on the blades indicating that they were from the Henry T. Lummus Collection. Note: Lummus assembled his massive collection before 1920. Lummus wrote articles on straight Razor Collecting for "Antiques" magazine in the 1920's. (I bought his 500 piece collection from his Estate over 40 years ago.) Another 500+ examples of his collection are currently on display at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. There are approximately 500 more examples that have not surfaced as yet. This grouping was put on consignment with a NYC Dealer for sale by Lummus before he passed away in the 1940’s.

Cased Matched Pair of Genuine Tortoiseshell handled Straight Razors having inlaid gold shield shaped escutcheon plates. Tang stamped “V(crown)R ROYAL LETTERS PATENT PLANTAGENET RAZOR.” C-1820’s. Beautiful lined flat presentation case. Note: Don’t be fooled by the number of tortoiseshell matched pairs that are being offered in this auction. It took me over 50 years to accumulate what is being offered here. This offering is the last of my collection, the top shelf of what I have collected. I used to buy collections, keep the top 5% and sell off the rest since the late 1960’s.

Cased Matched Pair of G. T. GOCDBEHERP? WARRANTED Straight Razors having a very elaborate pique work pattern of inlaid silver pins on both natural material handles. The pair fitted in lined flat presentation case comes with information on the four generations of owners. The first was Colonel George Corbin Washington. Col. George Corbin Washington was the son of George Washington’s Nephew . I found this article on George Washington’s Telescope: Link: https://www.rockislandauction.com/riac-blog/george-washingtons-telescope In this article was this quote on how the telescope managed to make it to the museum. “ From there it was passed on to the nephew’s son, Colonel George Corbin Washington (William’s great grandfather), who in turn passed it to his son, Colonel Lewis William Washington. The affidavit then states that “His widow gave it to their son, William d’Hertburn Washington, who, during his lifetime, sold it to my younger brother, Lewis William Washington… from whom I inherited it.” This is a very nice, ornate pair of razors with an impressive provenance.
