1886 $1 Martha Washington Silver Certificate. Here is the famous Martha Washington note, and what a note it is! This is still the first and only United States Currency to feature a real-life woman as the primary portrait, and it is the Mother of our Country! First printed in 1886, this currency could be redeemed for a hefty silver dollar.

The 1886 series was the very first of the $1 Silver Certificate notes, and this note has been ranked as #50 in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. The note was so popular that Martha Washington returned for a second series with a slightly revised design in 1891. The design began in the summer of 1886. The Galveston Daily News reported on August 17th, 1886, "It is learned at the Treasury Department that the new Silver Certificates authorized at the last session of Congress will not be ready for issue before November, the $1 certificate contains a vignette of Martha Washington."

The portrait featured on the currency is based on Charles François Jalabert's portrait of Martha Washington. "I have never witnessed one of these Martha Washington notes before," Rob Doyle, Pres. DCHS. Value $300.

In 2015, ten years after the grand opening of the museum, the Sports Museum Board of Directors appointed Joseph Cavaccini as curator and closed the museum for one year for the museum's first major face lift. The renovations included almost a complete gut of the Sports Museum level in the Reese Cultural Center and the announcement of a new permanent exhibition entitled "Legends of Dutchess". Joey Cavaccini (then 16 years old) and his father Dan, a trustee, renovated the museum and brought it into the 21st century as a modern respectable museum.

In 2016, the Museum reopened to the public as a destination museum in Dutchess County. Exhibits within Legends of Dutchess include highlights of over a dozen athletes who made it to the professional level in sports from Dutchess County as well as artifacts on almost 20 different sports with impacts on Dutchess County history.
