Natural indigo and white Asante kente woman’s cloth consisting of 14 hand woven cotton cloth, hand sewn strips measuring 76in. x 41in. Eight different warp and weft designs including zigzag line representing “liar’s cloth’ (Nkotopo) and the “water purifier insect”. “Liar’s cloth” was once reserved for Chiefs ans worn when confronting persons suspected of lying. Asante people, Ghana. Collected in Bonwire Village. Exhibited at Pen and Brush Gallery, New York, 2005. See “African Majesty. The Textile Art of the Ashante and Ewe” by P. Adler and N. Barnard, Plate 4,5 for examples of Asante indigo cloth and pp. 154-156. Also “Wrapped in Pride” by D.H. Ross, p. 120.
